FAQs
It depends on how you configure it. Each RotoSelect comes with 4 inserts, so you can choose how it is configured.
If you chose only one type of insert instead of mixing and matching, you could fit a maximum of:
4 inserts * 5 knives/insert = 20 knives
or
4 inserts * 2 watches/insert = 8 watches
or
4 inserts * 5 pens/insert = 20 pens
Think of the RotoSelect as display and storage for your favorite, heavy rotation EDC. It turns your awesome knives, watches, etc. into a piece of art in your house, instead of clutter.
We have already begun designing our second product, the "Archive Deck" that will integrate underneath the RotoSelect and have approximately 3x the capacity. Think of this as longer term storage for the bulk of your collection.
We are certain that this question will answer itself once you have one in your hands. But in the meantime here is the rundown:
The main body of the RotoSelect is made out of a single piece of aluminum, with eight sides bent over twice and welded. That means 16 separate welds that have to be performed and ground smooth. This is much more expensive that making the body out of multiple pieces riveted together, like a typical tool box or drawer, but feels and looks much nicer.
The RotoSelect was designed for repairability and customizability. This means that if you want to replace just one part of the RotoSelect, you can do so with simple tools. This is more expensive than manufacturing a product that cannot be easily disassembled and reassembled.
We are using heavier gauge materials and more premium finishes than necessary on the RotoSelect. We are doing this because it will needs to hold a heavy weight of knives without flexing. We also want it to look and feel great.
We recommend the dial up watch insert for most watch owners because it's a bit nicer with the velvet watch pillow to protect your timepiece and has the dial facing up.
That being said, the profile watch insert is a lot faster and easier for getting your watches in and out of the RotoSelect. The dial up insert requires you to clasp the watch around the pillow, whereas the profile insert allows the watch to slide on and off easily.
Also keep in mind that the dial up watch insert only works for watches with case thickness of up to 15mm (9/16”). For thicker watches, use the profile watch inserts.
Yes. But at this stage it's hard to say what and when.
To make it possible for people to fully customize the RotoSelect we are open sourcing the base file for the inserts. That way enthusiasts can design and 3D print their own inserts. Reach out to us at hello@rotoselect.com if you would like access to the file.
If a particular custom insert type (like small flashlights) has enough demand, we will design our own and produce it at scale.
We designed the RotoSelect from the ground up with the simple idea that your collection would fit on a large turning gear and be accessible by a single pivoting door. The appearance just kind of happened. It turned out that this size, shape etc. was just the optimal way to create this design.
Also, we love the functional/minimal style of Braun with just a bit of flair. This product is a bit of an homage to that look. Think clock radios from the 70s or 80s with round edges and a single pop of color.
